In
the 8th match of the Indian Premier League played on April 5th, 2023, Punjab
Kings defeated Rajasthan Royals by five runs at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium
in Guwahati. Punjab Kings won the toss and opted to bat first. They had a good
start as the opening pair of Prabhsimran Singh and Shikhar Dhawan added 90 runs
in just 9.4 overs. Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed for 60 runs off 34
deliveries, including seven boundaries and three sixes. Captain Shikhar Dhawan
scored an unbeaten 86 off 56 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes to guide
his team to a competitive total of 197/4 in 20 overs. In response, Rajasthan
Royals got off to a poor start, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second over.
They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 57/3 in the
sixth over. Sanju Samson and Devdutt Padikkal steadied the ship with a 34-run
partnership. However, Nathan Ellis struck twice in the 15th over to dismiss
both batsmen and put Punjab Kings back in control. Shimron Hetmyer scored a
quickfire 36 off 18 balls, but his run-out in the 19th over proved costly for
the Royals. Dhruv Jurel played a brilliant cameo of 32* off 15 balls, but it
was not enough as Rajasthan Royals finished their innings on 192/7 in 20 overs,
falling five runs short of the target. For Punjab Kings, Nathan Ellis was the
pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets for 28 runs in his four overs.
Arshdeep Singh also picked up two wickets, conceding 47 runs in his quota of
four overs. For Rajasthan Royals, Shimron Hetmyer was the top-scorer with 36
runs off 18 balls. In the end, it was a close match, but Punjab Kings held
their nerves and emerged victorious. With this win, Punjab Kings move up to the
top of the points table with four points from two matches, while Rajasthan
Royals remain winless after two games. Shikhar Dhawan was awarded the player of
the match for his brilliant unbeaten knock of 86 runs.
